    1. Conference Scope
The conference continues the series of the European Physical Society (EPS) conferences on plasma physics and fusion research, this year with emphasis on fusion research. Both theoretical and experimental results should be presented and discussed.
      The Board of the Plasma Physics Division of EPS has made efforts to develop the annual conference of the Division to the most important forum for the dissemination of novel results in all areas of plasma physics. For the first time this year a satellite meeting on Fast Ignition of Fusion Targets will be organized, in the form of parallel sessions.

4.Organization
The "28th EPS Conference on Controlled Fusion and Plasma Physics" is organized by "Centro de Fusão Nuclear", on behalf of the Contract of Association between the European Atomic Energy Community and "Instituto Superior Técnico", with the collaboration of "Universidade da Madeira".

6.Conference Site
The conference will be held in "Madeira Tecnopólo", a modern congress centre located at 1.2 Km from the center of Funchal.
      Transport in the morning and evening between the city center and the conference site will be provided by the LOC.
      The congress centre is equipped with coffee shops, snacks and restaurant.

7.Language
The official conference language is English

8.Scientific Programme
The scientific programme will consist of review, topical and tutorial invited lectures as well as of oral presentations and posters of contributed papers.
      Table 1 presents the draft scheme of the conference programme. The list of invited talks will be soon available in the Web site of the conference.

9.Call for Papers and Submission of Abstracts
Participants are invited to submit one-page abstracts of their contributed papers. Abstracts can only be submitted electronically in the Web site of the conference. Abstracts should be submitted before 16 February 2001. An e-mail per abstract must also be sent to the Scientific Secretary with the following information: title of the paper, topic and name of the presenting author.
      The one-page abstract should be written in clear English, in A4 size (21.0 x 29.5 cm) with a full 2.5 cm margin on all four sides, using 12 pts letter-type for words and one-and-half line spacing. The title (in capitals) as well as the authors and their affiliations must be included on the top of the text.
      Evaluation of the submitted papers will be made by the Programme Committee on the basis of the Abstracts. Authors will be notified by e-mail of the result until 31 March 2001. Most of the contributed papers will be presented as posters, only a limited number will be selected by the PC for oral presentation. A book of abstracts of the accepted papers will be printed and distributed to the participants during registration at the conference.
      A small number of post-deadline papers may be accepted by the Programme Committee if they include an important new result obtained after the regular deadline. The acceptance will be decided by the PC in Funchal on the 18 June 2001. Post deadline papers should be sent to the Scientific Secretary.

10.Papers and Publications
The contributed papers can only be submitted electronically before 18 June 2001 in the Web site of the conference. For back-up a camera-ready copy of the 4-page papers must be handed in at the registration desk.
      The Conference Proceedings containing the 4-page contributed papers will be published on Compact Disc (CD-ROM) after the conference. Each contributed paper will only be included in the proceedings if the registration fee has been paid.
      Papers of the invited lectures will be published in a special issue of Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion. Copies of the Journal will be distributed to the participants after the conference. These papers should be submitted on the first day of the conference and will be refereed by the Programme Committee.

11.Registration
Table 2 contains the registration fees. A registration fee must be paid for each paper.
      The conference fee includes all the conference services, the book of abstracts, proceedings, the conferences buses, welcome reception, conference tour, coffee and light refreshments during the conference breaks.
      The registration fee for accompanying persons includes refreshments during the morning and afternoon breaks of the sessions, admittance to the welcome party and the conference tour.
      Registration is done returning by mail the filled and signed Registration Form to the conference secretariat. Students should also sent a proof of their registration in the University.
     The payment of the registration fee could be made in the following ways:

12.Satellite Meetings
There will be two satellite meetings: Detailed information is available in the Web sites of the conference and of these meetings.

13.Transport to Funchal
Funchal has a new airport that can be reached using regular and charter flights from Lisboa and other European cities. Transport from the airport to the city center may be made by taxi. The Travel Agency could also provided transfers to the hotels.

14.Hotel Reservation
Hotel reservations, social activities for accompanying persons, transfers from and to the airport and other services will be organized by Viagens Abreu S.A., Congress Department.
      The Local Organizing Committee has made block reservations in different category hotels in the center of Funchal. Information is available in the Web site of the conference. Since Funchal is a busy tourist attraction city the participants are highly recommended to book the hotel as early as possible.
      Hotel reservations is done by returning the filled Hotel Reservation Form and paying the hotel deposit before 15 April 2001. Please mark your first and second choice with 1 and 2 on the form and pay the hotel deposit according to your first choice. Reservations will be handled in the order of the receipt of the Hotel Reservations Forms.

16.Cancellation
Notification of cancellation must be sent in writing to the Conference Secretariat.
      Cancellations received before 15 May 2001 will receive a refund of the fee and other payments. An administration charge of EUR 100 will be subtracted. Cancellations received after 15 May will not be refunded but the Book of Abstracts and the Conference Proceedings will be mailed to the registered person.
      Cancellations of hotel reservations before 15 May will receive a full refund of the hotel deposit. An administrative charge of EUR 10 will be subtracted. Later cancellations will receive no refund of the hotel deposit.
      As an alternative to cancellation a registered participant can send a substitute to the conference. Please inform the conference organizers before 1 June 2001.
