As EPS-29 conference is topically fusion oriented, the Board of the Plasma Physics Division will again use this opportunity to organise a special evening session, which is devoted to a meeting between the scientists in the field, about 600 are expected to attend the conference, with those who form and formulate the fusion science policy in Europe. This evening session is a good opportunity to exchange views, to get first-hand information on the recent development around ITER, the 6th Framework Programme and the consequences which might result from it - the restructuring of the European fusion research. It is also important that scientists have a forum where they can directly contact the leaders of the field, can comment to their programmatic views but also understand the political boundary conditions and necessities they are forced to face. The next years will be decisive for the future of fusion research in Europe.
The panel is composed of the chairmen of the major EU fusion committees
-   Dr. Pellat, chairman of the Consultative Committee for the Euratom Specific Research and Training Programme in the Field of Nuclear Energy (Fusion), CCE-Fu.
- Prof. Bradshaw, chairman of the Fusion Technology Committee, FTC.
- Prof. Robinson, chairman of the Fusion Physics Committee, FPC.
- Prof. Varandas, chairman of the European Fusion Development Agreement (EFDA).
Dr. Finzi, Principal Adviser of the Director-General of research of the Commission of the European Union in charge of Fusion matters, will also participate and Prof. Wagner, chairman of the Plasma Physic Division will chair the panel discussion. The panel discussion will be on Thursday, June 21st, right after the lectures. In order to come to a rather concentrated exchange of views, the panel members and those who actively participate in the discussion are requested to orient themselves to a list of important questions of interest to the full audience. A guide line could be:
- The chances and risks of FP6 facing the stringed financial conditions on one hand and the orientation toward ITER on the other.
- What is the role of the associations in FP6 and beyond?
- How is the distributed association structure organisationally transformed into a more central structure to built ITER?
- Why is it important to continue the operation of JET in FP6? Under what external conditions should JET be turned off?
- Is there enough support for ITER in Europe on the side of the scientists? Is there enough support for Cadarache as ITER site?
- What can the scientists do to support the case for ITER and to ensure that sufficient financial means are available for fusion in FP6?
