IPFN at EPS on Plasma Physics Conference 2026
Several researchers from IPFN attended the 52nd European Physical Society (EPS) Conference on Plasma Physics, held from 29 June to 3 July 2026 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The event gathered researchers from around the world to discuss the latest advances in plasma physics, including magnetic confinement fusion, beam plasma and inertial fusion, low-temperature plasmas, and basic, space and astrophysical plasmas.
The participation of IPFN researchers included contributions to the scientific programme and organisation of the conference. Carlos Silva delivered the invited talk “Spatio-temporal evolution of the edge flows and turbulence across the L-H transition on JET” and chaired the Magnetic Confinement Fusion session on Turbulence, Edge and Pedestal Physics. Hugo Terças also gave an invited talk, 'Axions in plasmas: from the lab to astrophysics'. Luís Gil was a member of the conference Programme Committee and chaired the session on NT and ELM-free plasmas.
IPFN PhD students also presented contributed talks: Lucas Ansia presented “Reexamination of collisional ionization cross sections including double ionization processes” and Bernardo Barbosa gave the talk “Control of nonlinear Breit-Wheeler positrons created in multi-PW strong field QED showers”.
The institute was also represented in the poster sessions by students João Biu, Marco Costa and Leonor Roque, together with researchers Maria Filomena Nave, Paulo Rodrigues and António Figueiredo, who presented their work across different areas of plasma physics.
A highlight of this year's conference was the presentation of the EPS Plasma Physics Division PhD Research Award to Pablo J. Bilbao, who completed his PhD in Physics at GoLP/IPFN. His thesis, 'Kinetic Instabilities in Extreme Plasma Physics: Laboratory and Astrophysical Dynamics', was recognised as one of the four most outstanding doctoral theses submitted by researchers from 38 EPS member countries.
Founded in 1968, the EPS promotes collaboration among physicists across Europe by bringing together national physical societies, individual members and research institutions. Through its Plasma Physics Division, it organises the annual EPS Conference on Plasma Physics, an international forum for researchers to present new results and discuss advances across all areas of plasma science.
