Luís Silva Honoured by the European Academy of Sciences

The Lisbon Academy of Sciences, hosted on 30 October, the ceremony for the award of the Blaise Pascal Medal in Physics to Luís Oliveira e Silva, GoLP/IPFN coordinator and Physics Department/IST Distinguished Professor. 

According to the statement released by the European Academy of Sciences (EURASC), the  award “recognises his outstanding contribution in the field of plasma physics, highlighting his pioneering research in plasma accelerators and on interactions in extreme scenarios of lasers and particle beams with plasmas. This medal underlines the importance of his scientific contribution to advancing plasma physics globally”.  

EURASC also emphasised his “unwavering dedication to advancing plasma physics, combined with his transformative research and leadership, which epitomise the spirit of innovation and excellence celebrated by the Blaise Pascal Medal in Physics. His profound impact on the field underscores the well-deserved recognition as the recipient of this prestigious award.” 

The Blaise Pascal Medal award was established by the European Academy of Sciences in 2003 to promote scientific excellence and honour researchers whose studies drive the development of new technologies and methodologies that contribute to scientific and social progress. The award is named after Blaise Pascal, the 17th-century French mathematician and physicist, whose contributions to mathematics, physics, and philosophy have had a lasting impact on modern science and technology.
