How to Apply

Background

You should have a solid background in Exact Sciences and Engineering – preferably, but not necessarily, including some basic knowledge in Plasma Physics.

You should be motivated to address cutting-edge scientific and technological problems, and have high availability to accept the mobility requirements of the program.

You should have excellent academic records, and be capable of embracing successfully a very demanding advanced training in Plasma Science and Engineering.

APPLAuSE is international in nature, so applications from foreign students are welcome and encouraged, including from countries outside the European Union.

Aplications

Calls for applications will open once a year, for a period of several weeks. The calls will be advertised in advance and disseminated through academic and institutional mailing lists, online, and through several other media. You may find detailed information about the application process in the current call description.

Admission Criteria

You must have a diploma or MSc degree (or equivalent qualification, provided it is accepted by IST/UTL) in Exact Sciences or Engineering. Exceptionally, candidates holding a BSc degree (or equivalent) with outstanding academic CV may be accepted upon decision of the Selection Committee of the program.

Selection Procedure

The selection will take place in two phases:

1. The Selection Committee will review and evaluate the applications according to the following criteria:
(i) Applicant’s merit,
(ii) Curriculum vitae and reference letters,
(iii) Motivation letter, 
(iv) recommendation letter(s).

Additional bonus will be given to applicants who
(i) are (co-)authors of papers in journals with peer reviewing,
(ii) have presented communications in conferences, or
(iii) have exceptional CVs demonstrating special skills,  
(iv) have finished their degrees after 1 June 2020.
The best candidates, ranked according to the global classification attributed, are admitted to a short-list.

2. Candidates in the short-list are interviewed by the Selection Committee (live or by videoconference), to assess their background, specific technical skills, motivation and communication aptitudes in English.

Each entering class comprises a maximum of ten students, although the number of selected candidates may be less than the number of grants available depending on their overall merit.
