• Know More

The Materials Processing and Characterization Group operate the ion beam accelerators of the Laboratório de Aceleradores of Instituto Superior Técnico. Its major interest is to use ion beam analysis to unveil plasma‑material interactions and develop new materials with engineered properties.

    The research focused on ion beam characterization methods enables:
  • The research of elemental modifications imposed to first-wall materials under reactor operation;
  • An advanced design and performance assessment of new materials (via mechanical alloying, sintering and composite fabrication).

Several methods are used in the preparation of the materials (e.g., mechanical alloying, arc melting) and their full characterization (e.g., XRD, SEM, DTA). Thermal treatments and thermal stabilities are studied up tp 1800 °C.
