We have available a state-of-the-art large magneto-optical-trap (MOT). Using this apparatus, we are able to cool and trap up to 10 billion Rubidium atoms at temperatures of the order of 100 microkelvin.

Device

An high power dye pulsed laser tuned below or above the ionization treshold creates, either a gas of Rydberg atoms that due to collisions evolve into a mixture of Rydberg gas and ultra cold plasma or an ultra cold plasma that partially recombines into Rydberg atoms, respectively.
