Infrastructures
Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon
The IST team operates the Laboratory for Intense Lasers since 1998 and brings together experts in optics and lasers, plasma physics, x-rays and advanced numerical simulation.
The research areas consist of high power or high energy laser applications, such as plasma physics, nonlinear optics, advanced radiation and particle sources.
The main goals of this facility are fundamental research in laser-plasma interaction and testing of experiments for large-scale facilities. The activity is mainly funded by FCT, Euratom, H2020 and ESFRI.
University of Coimbra
The Coimbra LaserLab was funded in 1973 and has been operational since then. The multidisciplinar team comprises specialists in instrumentation, spectroscopy, solar cells, sensors and photomedicine.
The research is centered in photochemistry, photobiology and photomedicine, with applications in physics, chemistry, materials science, biology and medicine.
The main goals are fundamental and applied research, and since 2010 more than 150 researchers (50 from abroad) have accessed the laboratory through European biannual calls. The activity is funded by FCT, NSRF, H2020 and through services to national and multinational companies.
Management structure
Laserlab-Portugal has the following governance structure:
Director, who represents the infrastructure towards FCT and other institutions. The Director will alternate between the Lisbon and Coimbra nodes and will be nominated by the Governing Board. The first Director is Gonçalo Figueira (Lisbon).
