Transportation

Transportation from Airport

Unlike other airports throughout Europe, the Lisbon Airport (Portela International Airport) is located very close to center of the city. So you don't have to travel a long time after landing in the airport!

Public transport

Note that the registration fee includes a Travel card with 10 single tickets. A single ticket allows you to travel in underground, buses and trams (but not in the train) within a period of 1 hour.

Public transport in Lisbon consists of buses (Carris), trams (Carris) and underground (Metro). The card "Cartão Viva Viagem" gives you the opportunity to travel around the city using all means of transportation. At the start you also need to buy a rechargeable Viva Viagem card which is an extra €0,50. You can charge the card in multiples of €5,00 and use it by "zapping" individual journeys at €1,40 a time. Do not throw the card away, it can be reloaded at any time.

Metro

To travel from Lisbon Airport to the centre of the city it may be quickest to take the metro, taking you to Saldanha station (financial centre of Lisbon) in just 15 minutes. You can buy a one-way ticket for €1,40, or a 24-hour pass for €6 (which allows you to use the metro and buses - but not trains). All of these options are available from the ticket machines, which have an easy-to-use menu in English. Full fare information at http://www.metrolisboa.pt/eng/customer-info/information-on-fares/).

Bus

If your hotel is located around Marquês de Pombal it may be quickest to take the bus.

Airport Buses

Special Airport Buses towards the city centre, Financial District and Oriente station - operated by Yellowbus. Yellowbus website page for full details including list of places served is available here.

The buses used on the Aerobus services have large luggage racks inside. These are limited stop buses. Aerobus 1 departs from outside the Arrivals Hall, a little further away from the Taxi Rank. It stops at Entrecampos (for the railway station), Saldanha, Marquês de Pombal, Avenida da Liberdade, Rossio and ends at the Cais do Sodré railway station.

If travelling by Aerobus, the only ticket available for the service is €3,15 and covers not only the Aerobus journey, but any journey made on the Carris network on that day (buses, trams and funiculars) - this does NOT include the Metro. Buses run every 20 minutes every day from 07:00 to 21:00 then every 30 minutes until 23:00.

City buses - normal service buses

Local buses 744 and 783 run towards Marquês de Pombal and Cais do Sodré.

Single journey cash fare on all buses is below €1,80; there are various passes and pre-pay cards available for regular users, including a one day pass at €6. Please note that large items of baggage cannot be taken on normal service buses.

Taxi

You can queue for taxis outside the arrivals exit. You can obtain a Taxi Voucher for a small extra charge from the Tourist Information desk, however the cost is €23. Without a Taxi Voucher, a taxi to the centre of Lisbon can cost from around €10-15 - and there is a surcharge for the luggage. On the other hand, if you take the escalator or the lift on arrival and go to the departures, you have a huge number of taxis just waiting to pick up passengers and usually there is less chances of being cheated than at the arrivals.

How to reach the CCB

Given the historical landmarks located in the Belém area, no large hotels are built near Centro Cultural de Belém (CCB) Conference Centre, so participants in conferences usually choose one of the many hotels in the downtown area and take public transportation to Belém.

Taking the Metro the direction of Rossio or Cais do Sodré is surely the quickest way to reach the river bank.

The best option is the tram ("eléctrico") 15E, which follows a route almost parallel to the river. The whole route (Metro + Tram) should not take more than 40 minutes. Tram 15E Route and Timetable: http://carris.transporteslisboa.pt/en/tram/15E/ascendente/

In Rossio or Cais do Sodré, take either buses 714 or 728.

Alternatively, one can take the train at Cais do Sodré and get out at the Belém stop (travel card provided not valid on trains). Another option is to take bus 727 at Marquês de Pombal (R. Braamcamp), Fontes Perereira Melo, Av. República.
