  • FRIENDS distinguished with honorable mention
    The FRIENDS project has been distinguished with honorable mention in the Innovation - Pedro Oliveira category, which honors the research projects that Exame Informática considered to be the most innovative of the year.

    The ceremony of "The Best and The Biggest of Technological Portugal" took place on November 23, 2023, at the Portuguese Communications Foundation in Lisbon, and it can be watched again here.

  • FRIENDS at radio station Antena 1
    FRIENDS was presented by Alberto Vale in the radio program "90 segundos de ciência", broadcasted daily in Antena 1. This program aims to disseminate the work developed by Portuguese researchers.

  • FRIENDS at NInTec 2022
    MSc student Nuno Veiga, supervised by Prof. Alberto Vale from IPFN/IST and Prof. Rodrigo Ventura from ISR/IST, participated with an oral presentation about FRIENDS in NInTec Science Days.

    NInTec association brings together researchers and staff involved in research activities across the broad and diverse scientific ecosystem under the auspices of IST. The first edition of NInTec Science Days was held in Lisbon, October 6-7, 2022.

  • Armed Forces Innovation Prize 2022
    PhD student Luís Marques, supervised by Prof. Pedro Vaz from C2TN/IST and Prof. Alberto Vale from IPFN/DEEC/IST, awarded the Innovation Prize in the Armed Forces 2022.

    This award is intended to recognize Ideas that can contribute to the development or improvement of existing capabilities, with a view to their future use in military operations or in support of civil emergency operations.

  • MICRADS 2022, Colombia
    PhD Student major Luís Marques (CIAFA/AFA) gave an oral presentation entitled "Development of a portable neutron detection system for Security and Defense applications". The detection system integration in a multirotor allowed the screening of a maritime shipping container with a neutron and gamma-ray sources inside.

    The event was the Multidisciplinary International Conference of Research Applied to Defense and Security, which was held at Escuela Naval de Suboficiales ARC Barranquilla, in Colombia, July 11-13, 2022.

  • AUXDEFENSE 2022, Guimarães
    PhD Student major Luís Marques (CIAFA/AFA) gave an oral presentation entitled "A novel mobile radiation detection system for security and defense applications". The presentation comprised the recent developments on the mobile radiation detection system based on a low cost, lightweight and low consumption plastic scintillator with silicon photomultipliers which can be coupled to a multirotor for the screening of shipping container cargo.

    The event was the 3rd World Conference on Advanced Materials for Defense, which was held in Guimarães, July 6-8, 2022.

  • TOXECO 2021, Aveiro
    FRIENDS team will provide one of the lectures in TOXECO2021, under the scope of the Master Thesis in EcoToxicology and Risk Analysis at the University of Aveiro. It will also be open to the whole community.

    The event took place on 26 May 2021 via Zoom, and the agenda is available here.

  • Seminar at IST
    PhD Student major Luís Marques (CIDIUM/AFA) gave a talk entitled "Overview of recent developments in mobile radiation detection systems for different scenarios - challenges and opportunities".

    The talk were performed remotely by Zoom on 24 March, where developments about the mobile systems used for radiological and nuclear monitoring and detection were presented. Luos Marques is oriented by Prof. Alberto Vale (IPFN/IST) and Dr. Pedro Vaz (C2TN/IST).

  • FRIENDS at ERF 2021
    FRIENDS team organized a workshop at the European Robotics Forum 2021 entitled "Robot technologies for monitoring of radiological threats".

    FRIENDS team put together people from academia, industry, government, and non-governmental institutions, and end-users to discuss the main challenges on the use of robots for radiological analysis, April 13-15, 2021.

  • FRIENDS at ESRCH 2020 Workshop
    Earth Systems, Radioactivity and Cultural Heritage (ESRCH) is a thematic strand at the Center for Nuclear Sciences and Technologies (C2TN) at IST.

    On the 3rd November 2020 edition, some actions conducted within the frame of project FRIENDS were presented by Jorge Borbinha, with a presentation entitled "Radiological Monitoring in NORM sites using drones: Flight Strategy, Performance Analysis of CZT sensor and Preparations for Field Measurements".

  • FRIENDS at Techdays'20 in Aveiro
    During the 6th edition of Techdays, FRIENDS was presented to students, the general community, tech companies and other institutions visiting the venue. In its exhibition, a rollup and a hexarotor was shown. Positive feedback was received from the visitors.

    Techdays was held in Parque de Exposições de Aveiro, October 12-18, 2020.

  • FRIENDS with an oral presentation in ANIMMA'2019
    FRIENDS was presented in ANIMMA'2019 and resulted in the paper "Radioactive hot-spot detection using unmanned aerial vehicle surveillance". ANIMMA'2019 is the 6th International Conference on Advancements in Nuclear Instrumentation Measurement Methods and their Applications.

    This conference was held in Portorož, Slovenia, June 17-21, 2019.


  • MARIA presented in the Lab2Market at IST
    MARIA was one of the selected projects in the 2019 edition of Lab2Market at IST.

    Lab2Market@Tecnico is an innovation acceleration program. The 2019 edition has the support of i-Deals and Everis Portugal to provide a total of 250 hours of business mentoring to the selected projects.


  • FRIENDS presented in the Defense and Security Workshop
    The project FRIENDS was presented by a poster in the Defense and Security Workshop - Nuclear Technologies and Advanced Materials for Defense and Security at the C2TN campus, Bobadela, in November 2018.

    The event was an opportunity to seek new partnership with the Portuguese Armed Forces, namely the Navy, Army and Air Force, as well as their respective schools


  • MARIA was a finalist in the Appstation
    The MARIA is a Mobile Application for Radiation Intensity Assessment, developed under the project FRIENDS, to be used in drones or in common smartphones connected to a radiological sensor.

    The MARIA was selected as one of the 12 finalists among 50 projects candidates in the Appstation competition, in October 2018, to select the best mobile application.

About FRIENDS

FRIENDS (Fleet of dRones for radIological inspEction, commuNication anD reScue) is a project of research and development that addresses the quick characterization of the geographic extent of radiological contamination by a fleet of drones equipped with advanced technologies of sensors. This project is supported by the FCT, Compete 2020 and Lisboa 2020 under the PORTUGAL 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
