Luís Gil successfully defends PhD thesis
Luís Gil defended his PhD thesis on January 12th 2021 and was awarded the grade “Pass with Distinction and Honour”. Luís received a fellowship in the scope of the APPLAuSE doctoral program on Plasma Science and Engineering in 2016, when he joined IPFN for his thesis under the supervision of Dr. Carlos Silva and Dr. Tim Happel (Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik, Germany).
During his PhD, Luís worked at the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) tokamak in addition to the research work carried out at IPFN. He discovered and investigated a high confinement ELM-free regime in AUG that was identified as the EDA H-mode.
Combining experiments and knowledge from different areas, Luís significantly improved this promising scenario, which now fulfils a number of conditions required for future reactors. The project resulted in a Nuclear Fusion letter, several co-authored publications, and is currently one of the key topics in the European fusion research programme.
