EFDA Fusion Researcher Fellowship for Paulo Rodrigues

IPFN researcher Paulo Rodrigues was awarded an EFDA Fusion Researcher Fellowship for his project "Full-orbit computational tools for energetic-particle-plasma interactions".

The research efforts will focus on the dynamics of charged particles traveling at high speeds in complex magnetic fields and on their interaction with magnetohydrodynamic plasma oscillations, a fundamental process which is transversal to many areas in plasma physics. However, for future fusion reactors like ITER, such interaction is critical: fusion-born energetic ions, which need to remain confined in the hot core to keep the plasma burning, may actually be drained out by plasma oscillations, thereby stopping the energy production and causing serious damages to the reactor's walls.

The awarded research will contribute to solve key questions in this important topic and to advance our knowledge in one challenging subject of plasma physics.
