IPFN president speaks at APE meeting

The Auditorium of the Order of Engineers in Lisbon recently hosted a landmark event for Portugal's energy future, titled 'Nuclear: A Necessary Debate.' Organized by the Portuguese Energy Association (APE) in collaboration with the Order of Engineers, the event brought together distinguished experts to discuss the potential role of nuclear energy in Portugal.

Dr. Bruno Soares Gonçalves, President of the Institute of Plasmas and Nuclear Fusion (IPFN), was among the key speakers. The debate was led by António Vidigal, Energy and Information Technology Consultant, and Dr. Bruno Soares Gonçalves, with João Torres, President of APE, serving as the moderator.

The addressed topics included the skills required to develop nuclear energy, public acceptance, and the importance of research and development. Dr. Gonçalves highlighted the significance of the debate, calling it a space for open and constructive dialogue on the role of nuclear energy in decarbonization. 'The discussion allowed for an enriching exchange of ideas, which is fundamental to understanding the possibilities and challenges that nuclear energy presents,' he stated.

Approximately 40 participants attended the session, contributing to a dynamic exchange of ideas and perspectives. The event underscored the commitment of the APE and the Order of Engineers to promoting informed and balanced discussions on critical energy issues. Additionally, the debate marked an important step toward evaluating the integration of nuclear energy into Portugal's electricity system and its interaction with energy markets.
