IPFN inspires students during Science and Technology Week

As part of the first edition of “Engenharia e Ciência vão à Escola”, an initiative by Instituto Superior Técnico held from 18 to 22 November, during the Science and Technology Week, students from Lisbon, Loures, and Oeiras had the opportunity to engage with researchers across interactive sessions. Throughout the week, these activities inspired 1st to 9th graders to explore scientific concepts and innovations, with IPFN researchers contributing to this initiative by sharing their knowledge and fostering curiosity in science and technology.

IPFN researchers Bruno Soares Gonçalves and Gonçalo Figueira shared their expertise with the students through engaging activities. Bruno Gonçalves visited EB1/JI Lóios School, where he presented “Nuclear Fusion in the Age of Climate Change” to a 1st-grade class. During his session, he introduced the principles of electricity and nuclear fusion, captivating the young audience with a plasma ball, fondly referred to as a 'star-making machine.' The students even got to make wishes on plasma ball. 'They learned that one of the most important questions a scientist asks is Why?' shared Bruno, who was thrilled to receive creative drawings from them, showing how they imagined what being a scientist would be like.

Meanwhile, Gonçalo Figueira engaged 9th-grade students at José Cardoso Pires Secondary School with the activity 'Light and Colours'. The students actively participated, sharing thoughtful reflections and writing meaningful feedback about the concepts they had learned.

Through these activities, IPFN not only inspired students but also revealed the excitement and relevance of science in our daily lives, encouraging the next generation to explore and question the world around them.
