Overview

Objective: To strengthen IPFN’s scientific infrastructure in order to consolidate its national and international leadership in Plasma Science and Engineering, supporting both fundamental and applied research in nuclear fusion, compact accelerators and sustainable plasma technologies.

Project Description: The investment supports the reinforcement of IPFN’s research infrastructure and experimental capabilities in the fields of plasma science, fusion, and advanced technologies. This includes the development and modernisation of experimental platforms for plasma physics, laser–plasma interaction, plasma-based compact accelerators, and plasma diagnostics; advanced computational resources for large-scale simulations and data-intensive research; specialised laboratories for plasma applications in energy, materials science, nanotechnology, and biomedicine; as well as infrastructure supporting participation in major international research initiatives and facilities, including projects related to ITER, IFMIF-DONES, ELI, and ESA.
The investment also strengthens IPFN’s role as Portugal’s leading research institution in plasma science and engineering, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, advanced education and training, and the transfer of cutting-edge technologies to society and industry.
